Prepare for an appliance cleaning visit by clearing the route and nearby
work area, allowing cooking appliances to cool, and keeping the model
instructions available. Follow the preparation agreed with your cleaner.
Leave fitted parts and connections in place, keep children and pets away
from the work area, and report any change in the appliance's condition
before the visit.
This guide covers practical preparation for ovens, hobs, BBQs and pizza
ovens once the intended work has been discussed. For the available
service types, see
appliance and gutter cleaning.
Gutter access is a separate task; the checklist below is for cooking
appliances.
Start with the preparation instructions for your visit
Check the appointment details and any instructions already provided.
If you have not received preparation guidance, ask what the cleaner
needs before making changes to the appliance. A built-in oven, a
coated hob and an outdoor pizza oven may need different arrangements.
Confirm which appliance is being cleaned and whether you need to make
a sink or another nearby area available. Ask about any water, power
or ventilation requirements rather than assuming them. Tell the
provider if an agreed facility will be unavailable.

Clear the route and the space around the appliance
Move shoes, bags, loose kitchen items and other everyday obstructions
out of the route from the entrance. Clear the floor in front of the
appliance so its door can be approached without stepping around
belongings. Put fragile ornaments, food and utensils away from the
nearby worktop.
Clear loose belongings without pulling out a cooker or shifting heavy
furniture. If the room is too restricted to create access safely,
tell the cleaner beforehand. Describe the restriction and let the
provider explain whether the proposed visit is workable.
Arrange access through shared entrances, gates or reception where
relevant. Let the person providing entry know the appointment details.
Keep children and pets in a separate area during the work, and discuss
any household needs that affect how the space can be used.
Plan cooking so the appliance is ready
Ask when to stop using the appliance and allow it to cool before the
agreed visit. There is no single cooling period suitable for every
oven, hob or outdoor cooking appliance. Follow the model guidance
and the preparation instructions agreed with the provider; do not
plan to finish cooking immediately before arrival.
For example,
Bosch's oven-cleaning guidance
says the oven should be switched off and cool before cleaning. This
is manufacturer guidance, not a universal preparation procedure for
every model. Use your own appliance instructions to resolve
model-specific questions.
For
single, double and range oven cleaning,
remove food and personal cookware once it is safe to handle. Ask
whether racks and trays should remain in place. Do not remove the
door, glass panels or rack supports to make the appointment easier.
If a BBQ or pizza oven is included, clear the route to its usual
location and tell the cleaner about weather or access changes. Do
not relocate a heavy appliance, disconnect a fuel supply or dismantle
a cooking stone as preparation. Agree any model-specific steps first.
Leave cleaning products and fitted parts alone
You do not need to hide the condition of the appliance by attempting
a deep clean before the visit. Avoid applying additional oven cleaner,
degreaser or a home-made mixture unless the provider has specifically
agreed a compatible preparation step. Do not start a self-cleaning
cycle solely to prepare for the appointment without checking the model
instructions and discussing it first.
If you have already applied a product, tell the cleaner its name,
where it was used and whether residue remains. Keep the original
label available. Do not mix products or try to neutralise one with
another:
HSE's cleaning-substances guidance
warns that some mixtures release harmful gases. This workplace
guidance supports the chemical-safety point; it does not prescribe
your appliance's cleaning method.
Give a short handover when the cleaner arrives
Show the appliance and have the manual or model details ready.
Point out known scratches, damaged coatings, loose parts and any
fault that has appeared since the booking. If something has changed
beforehand, contact the provider before the appointment rather than
leaving it as a surprise on arrival.
For a rented or managed property, make sure the person providing
entry can explain the agreed work and reach whoever can approve a
change. Do not assume a neighbour or keyholder can authorise extra
tasks. This is a practical access arrangement, not a statement about
who is legally responsible for the appliance.
Before work starts, check where household members should stay clear
and how you will be told when the appliance can be used again.
Follow the specific completion advice provided for the appliance and
method used; do not assume every clean has the same immediate-use
instructions.
